The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is a federally chartered, nonpartisan institution that was created by the US Congress to serve as America’s national memorial to the victims of the Holocaust and an educational institution dedicated to the history and lessons of the Holocaust. The Museum seeks to educate Americans from all 50 states and all walks of life as well as international audiences. The Museum has three areas of expertise: Holocaust remembrance, Holocaust scholarship and education, and genocide prevention.

Duties include:

Conducting the physical tracking of collections items using both electronic and manual systems, including barcoding technology, to ensure locations of items are accurate for activities such as exhibition, conservation, loan, reference, digitization, photography and storage. Participates in a regular schedule of collections inventories.

Assist in carrying out established procedures for the digitization and photography of collections items. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, retrieving items from and returning them to storage, handling objects when needed, and assisting in the creation and maintenance of collections documentation.

Creating and maintaining collection documentation including hardcopy and electronic registration records for collections items in the Museum’s holdings.

Assisting higher graded collections management staff members with transportation arrangements for the movement of collections, donated or loaned, into or out of Museum facilities to ensure physical environmental safety and professional handling at all times.

Retrieving items from and returning them to storage, condition reporting objects, and packing and unpacking shipping containers. Operations a variety of vehicles to accomplish collection moves including, but are not limited to, motor vehicles, forklifts and personal lifts.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Qualifying experience for the GS-7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-5 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. The specialized experience requirements for this position are arranging or rearranging of museum collections; carrying out collections imaging procedures; conducting the physical tracking of collections items; and creating and maintaining collection documentation; adhering to policy relating to the access, handling, and storage of museum collections; and assisting in arranging transportation of museum collections.

One (1) full academic year of related graduate level education or Superior Academic Achievement.

OR

A combination of education and experience.
