Summary

This position is located in Division of Nursing, Sterile Processing Department (SPD). Purpose of this position is to use medical equipment such as steamers, High level Disinfectant washers, sonic equipment, heat sealers to perform a variety of tasks necessary for the processing of sterile supplies for distribution to the OR service, acute patient care nursing units and various outpatient clinics. Position reports to the Supervisory Nurse of the department.

Help

  • Decontaminate the full range of reusable medical supplies and equipment used within the hospital's units and clinics. Operate various kinds of equipment such as ultrasonic cleaners, washers, and sterilizers.
  • Disassemble and clean equipment such as suction machines, heating/cooling machines, infusion pumps, etc. using approved disinfectants, detergents, and cleaners. Reassemble equipment after cleaning and tests for proper functioning.
  • Provides sterilization and control of sterilized supplies and equipment by using AAMI, federal regulations, and AORN standards regarding cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, quality control/verification of process, packaging, storage, recalls due to process failure, and implants.
  • Selects appropriate method when wrapping supplies to prevent breakthrough, dates and labels packaging upon completion. Assists in maintaining the sterility of supplies.
  • Performs daily and/or load biological testing of sterilizers, records and notifies Charge Nurse/Supervisor Nurse of any contaminated loads so they can institute recall procedure. Assists in maintaining level of supplies necessary for management of patient care in in-patient and out-patient areas.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of asepsis and sterilization methods. Receive trays, sets and equipment from sterilizer, check for effectiveness of sterilization, places tags on sterilized material indicating date of sterilization and expiration date, stock shelves. Assemble and load operating room carts according to schedules, fill special and emergency request for supplies.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

GS-05: Candidate must have completed 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level to qualify for the GS-5 level; or must have 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation.
GS-05 Specialized experience: Examples include: Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterilized medical supplies and equipment.

GS-06: Candidate must have completed 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level to qualify for the GS-6 level.
GS-06 Specialized experience: Examples include: Experience in utilizing technical names, general uses and physical characteristics of supplies and equipment, and operating conditions of medical supply items; Experience in decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; Experience in aseptic techniques and operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers.

Selective Placement Factor: Must have current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (HSPA, CBSPD) and keep in good standing by maintaining special training to keep current knowledge base in a rapidly changing field.

Must have BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Additional information

Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. If an exemption is approved then wearing a face mask and regular testing for COVID-19 will be required. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
