Duties

Help
  • Prepares recreation areas/sites for visitor use. Oversees fee collection activities, maintaining records on and accounting for funds and submitting deposits.
  • Advises visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, amenities available, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities.
  • Plans day-to-day operations of a recreation area or site that provides such facilities as camping, water sports or picnic areas, coordinating routine activities with maintenance personnel.
  • Coordinates projects identified in the annual work plan; including planning, designing, surveying, construction, maintenance of trails, campsites, etc., as required.
  • Presents formal and interpretive programs to include but not limited to orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducts walks, demonstrations and campfire programs.
  • Where appropriate, develops interpretive programs, conducting independent research of topics using sources such as records, books, files, and, where appropriate, interviews with people who have personal knowledge of a particular site or event.
  • Posts daily weather, flash flood, and road conditions for safety of visitors. Patrols and inspects facilities ensuring compliance with rules and regulations (i.e., parking, campfires, noise level, sanitation, safety).

Qualifications

1) Posses and maintain a valid State's Driver License for duration of appointment.

For GS-05
You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes: (1) working with others to monitor, collect, and count monetary transactions. Applicants must have interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public on a day-to-day basis.; (2) Assisting with trash collections, maintenance and clean-up of a facility; (3) operating a variety of audiovisual and other equipment; (4) providing information to the general public.

Education: 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.

For GS-07
You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) providing visitor information on public lands and/or recreation areas, trail routes (motorized and nonmotorized), recreational site visit availabilities, or special recreation activities/opportunities; (2) inspecting recreation sites/facilities to ensure compliance with rules and regulations; (3) preparing recreation sites/campgrounds for visitor use; (4) working with others to monitor, collect, count, and record recreation visitor fees from recreation sites/campgrounds and/or digital web-based collection sites. Applicants must have interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public on a day-to-day basis; (5) operating a variety of audiovisual and other equipment used in connection with the recreation management program.

Education: Successful completion of at least one year of graduate level education from an accredited college or university in a field directly related to the work of the position to include: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources that has provided the knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in this position.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate Graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads.

Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
