Summary

This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment (NLAE), Midwest Climate Hub, Soil, Water, and Air Research Unit located in Ames, IA.

In this position, you will serve as a national liaison connecting the Midwest and other Climate Hubs with ARS scientists regionally and nationally.

This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 10 years.

Duties

Help
  • Serves on the leadership team for the Midwest Climate Hub and participates regularly in Midwest Climate Hub meetings.
  • Creates and maintains a national tracking capability to connect ARS scientists to Climate Hub staff regionally and by subject area to better facilitate Research Unit-Climate Hub connections.
  • Plans and coordinates climate hub, partner, and stakeholder meetings, outreach events, and other gatherings involving the exchange of climate hub technology, information, and practices.
  • Participates in ongoing research and development projects based on expertise.
  • Participates in research programs to leverage ARS and other scientific research into syntheses and vulnerability assessments on the impacts of climate variability and change in agricultural production.
  • Connects with a broad range of scientist who either work for, or who are funded by, the USDA, to ensure that the deep knowledge of climate -and resilience- based solutions is made accessible to Midwestern stakeholders.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements for Agronomy Series, 0471

  1. Degree: agronomy; or related discipline of science that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in the basic plant sciences, including at least 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, such as those dealing with plant breeding, crop production, and soil and crop management.
OR
  1. Combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, including a minimum of 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Graduate Education: Agronomy, or one of the related disciplines or fields of science, such as plant physiology, soils, or genetics, where the curriculum or pattern of training placed major emphasis on field crops or agronomy. Graduate study in related fields, such as botany, plant pathology, and biochemistry may also be qualifying, provided it placed a sufficient amount of emphasis on agronomy.

Basic Requirements for Physical Science Series, 1301
  1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
  1. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
In addition to the basic requirements above, all applicants must also meet the following minimum qualification requirements:

GS-12:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience facilitating collaboration among scientists and staff to share research information and results; developing outreach information including fact sheets, outreach events or tool development derived from research; and presenting climatological data to both summarize and forecast information and findings.

GS-13:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience coordinating scientists performing climate-related research; develops automated tools to make program data more accurate or easier for others to utilize; and participating in research programs to leverage scientific research into vulnerability assessments.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
