Help
  • You will work on varied complex state-of-the art equipment systems, combat subsystems, or unique equipment systems and subsystems requiring the application of advanced scientific and engineering theories, concepts, and principles.
  • You will provide expertise in research or development of new or improved systems or equipment, advancement of technology, or resolution of controversial or novel (new) problems
  • You will develop or test new equipment/materials/concepts that (significantly) add to the operability and usefulness of what exists OR develop new equipment/systems having new features.
  • You will develop plans and procedures to extend existing knowledge and test to account for newly emerging ideas and concepts.
  • You will provide expert advice guidance to managers, supervisors, sponsors on technical aspects of systems or concept development.
  • You will carry out work that may have little or no precedent and provide leadership in resolving major technical and administrative problems.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • FOR 1550 SERIES: This is a Cyberspace Workforce position, work role code Research/Development Specialist, proficiency Basic level.
  • FOR 1550 SERIES: The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain qualifications in DoDM 8140.03 Cyber Workforce Qualification and Department of Navy policies.

Qualifications

FOR ND-04 (GS-12/13 equivalent): Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower pay band, ND-03 (GS-09/11 equivalent), in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: experience as an engineer or scientist evaluating programmatic and technical information for the development of engineering/scientific solutions or integration of technologies into complex systems/subsystems relevant to unmanned operations, littoral operations, or maritime operations.

Education

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

For the ND-1301, Professional Physical Science Series.
- successfully completed a bachelor's degree or higher in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
- combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

For the ND-1310, Professional Physics Series.
- bachelor's degree or higher in physics, or a related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics. Courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, course in any of two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
OR
- combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, course in any of two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.

For the ND-1515, Professional Operations Research Series.
- bachelor's or higher degree in operations research.
OR
- successfully completed a bachelor's or higher degree with at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics and at least 3 of the 24 semester hours are in calculus.

For the ND-1520, Professional Mathematics Series.
- successfully completed a degree in mathematics or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics.
OR
- combination of education and experience demonstrated by courses equivalent to a major in mathematics (including at least 24 semester hours in mathematics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

For the ND-1550, Professional Computer Science Series.
- bachelor's degree in computer science.
OR
- bachelor's or higher degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of my 30 semester hours were in a combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.
