Summary

The primary purpose of the work in the Art Director position is to lead the visual identity that defines the brand. Reporting to the Chief Brand Officer and Publisher in the Office of Brand Strategy and Publishing within the division of Exhibitions, Programs, and Audience Engagement, the Art Director provides supervision to subordinate staff and oversees and executes visual design concept development and project management.

As the Visual Information Specialist, you will:

  • In collaboration with the Chief Brand Officer and Publisher evaluates brand visibility and ensures high quality and effectiveness of all brand creative projects, and plays a supporting role in developing and executing projects to achieve goals. Supervises, directs, and takes ownership of design concept development and idea execution, pursues idea extensions, and leads working collaborations as part of the creative team; also develops working partnerships across the museum. Maintains mastery knowledge of branding and ensures its consistency across channels and products. Must have experience launching a brand and its extensions, developing and maintaining brand guidelines, creating templates and toolkits, and auditing for brand maintenance. Proactively pursues solutions beyond the immediate scope of work and finds ways to tighten and/or grow the brand visually.
  • Maintains mastery knowledge of design theory and innovative audience engagement and brand strategies for all channels; supports the Chief Brand Officer and Publisher in developing and executing projects to achieve goals. Maintains mastery knowledge of signage design and material, production, and installation methods. Maintains mastery knowledge of fine art book design including experience with concept development, materials, production, color proofing for artwork, and printing methods.
  • Directly supervises one or more Visual Information Specialists, performing the full range of supervisory responsibilities. Provides technical and administrative supervision; maintains an organizational environment and processes that positively influences employee opportunity to
    deliver high quality products and services. Establishes guidelines for the accomplishment of work and individual performance expectations for staff members in accordance with institution-wide policies and procedures for supervisors.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for NF-1084-14.

For this position, specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-13 level in the federal service or private sector, managing graphic design services for an organization.

Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria: Second Hurdle Assessment.

How you will be evaluated: You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications for this position. This vacancy utilizes a multiple hurdle assessment process to determine the qualifications of applicants. The first hurdle consists of applicants completing an online occupational questionnaire related to the major duties and competencies of the position. The second hurdle consists of you submitting a portfolio that shows samples of your writing, editorial, and overall publishing experience.

Education

Education

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- commercial art, fine arts, art history, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, photography, visual communication, or other fields related to the position. Some positions may also require subject-matter knowledge of medicine, science, or technical equipment.

Advanced training in a vocational school, technical institute, or art institute above the high school level in one of the fields listed above is creditable as general experience on a month-for-month basis.

General Experience (for GS-5 positions): Experience that demonstrated the skills and creativity needed to use the tools or equipment associated with the work. Because talent and creative ability are vital to successful work performance, samples of work or other suitable evidence of technical competence may be required. Unpaid experience that is pertinent should be credited based upon its relevance to the work of the particular position to be filled. To be qualifying, the work must have involved visual communication of information or the application of the principles of artistic design.

Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience in the actual type of work for which application is made. Unpaid experience is creditable, provided the work done was of a quality level and demonstrated the ability required for the position. This includes planning the preparation and use of photographs, illustrations, drawings, and other art work, charts, diagrams, dioramas, maps, slides, overlays, and other kinds of visual material for use in communicating information through visual means.
