The Ecosystem Science Division at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center seeks candidates with broad interests in developing and applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML) tools and approaches to advance understanding of ocean ecology and ecosystem dynamics. We seek an individual to develop cloud-based pipelines for AI/ML processing of a variety of optical imagery and acoustic data. The position will work as part of a team of ecologists and oceanographers to understand the ecological impacts of fishing and climate change in the Antarctic and of offshore wind development in the California Current.
We operate a large, growing, and diversifying fleet of autonomous systems, including aerial and underwater vehicles with optical and acoustic instrument payloads to observe ocean ecosystems. While we are presently focused on the use of shadowgraph and other camera systems to image plankton in the water column, the diversity of instruments we use and measurements we collect provides a wide avenue to develop and apply AI/ML tools.
