Help

As a Supervisory Research Physician, you will:

  • Serve as the Chief of the Infectious Disease Pathology Branch.
  • Direct the development and implementation of policies and plans for all scientific and operational functions of the Branch.
  • Serve as a scientific and technical resource for the organization by providing expertise in molecular pathology, histopathology, and ultrastructural analysis for detecting infectious disease agents and studying the interactions between microbial agents and host cells.
  • Assist in the review and approval process of scientific protocols and manuscripts to ensure that they meet accepted criteria and maintain the highest standards for organizational activities, and publications.
  • Oversee the development of prevention and control strategies based on the findings of epidemiologic and laboratory investigations.
  • Assure that publications and presentations reflect research planning, organization, execution, and analysis of highest quality for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international scientific meetings.
  • Maintain effective collaboration and interchange of scientific findings within the Branch and Division, and among a broad array of constituencies in the biomedical scientific community.
  • Participate in domestic and international forums concerning the scientific, clinical, and operational aspects of the control of diseases.
  • Conceive, develop, and conduct singly, or as a member of a team, new basic and applied research areas and priorities directed toward a more complete understanding of the pathogenesis of various infectious diseases and previously unrecognized clinical syndromes of infectious origin.
  • Monitor progress of testing, investigations and research and provide written and oral summaries as needed.

Due to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) process enhancement to use Shared Certificates throughout the Agency, some of the requirements below may differ:

  • This position may be subject to the OGE Financial Disclosure requirements of the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 (P.L. 95-521).   • In accordance with Executive Order 12564 of September 15, 1986, The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is A Drug-Free Federal Workplace. This position may require a Drug Test and be subject to Random Drug Testing. The position may require the submission of a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and be subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing upon hiring. If required to submit to urinalysis, the appointment to the position will be contingent upon a negative test result.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement.

Basic Qualifications:

Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

Licensure:
For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Graduate Training:
Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. Graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.

  • An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of theAccreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
  • A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
  • A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.

Additional Requirements: In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

For GP-15 -- 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training.

To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, which must include the following experience: experience planning, developing and implementing a scientific program which performs infectious disease research and provides public health services and technical assistance in the area of infectious disease diagnosis and pathology.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
