Summary

This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Office of Research Services, Electronic Records Division, Processing Branch. The Electronic Records Division is responsible for accessioning, processing, preserving, and providing access to the electronic records in the custody of Research Services. As an archivist, you will carry out complex assignments to process, describe, and preserve transfers of electronic (born-digital) archival records.

Duties

Help

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

As an ARCHIVIST, you will:

  • Develop plans for processing records beyond the establishment of initial control.
  • Use multiple tools, software, and systems to examine and verify electronic records in a variety of digital formats.
  • Recognize relationships among records transferred to the legal and/or physical custody of the National Archives and Records Administration, establish the boundaries of series, and determine appropriate record group allocation.
  • Prepare descriptions of complex bodies of records and digital objects for inclusion in the National Archives Catalog.
  • Plan for and execute the preservation of electronic records in an approved digital repository.
  • Perform electronic file format conversion for preservation.

  • The work is mostly sedentary, however the incumbent must be physically able to perform the duties of this position. Physical demands may include climbing caster-equipped ladders, maneuvering on catwalks, moving heavy carts of records, and handling boxes of records stored up to 15 feet above the floor and typically weighing 50 pounds, occasionally more. The work may also demand considerable periods of maintaining a stationary position, moving, or otherwise positioning oneself to access objects, equipment, or records located in high and low places

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience: For the GS-9 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:

Performing records maintenance, processing, or preservation actions in adherence with archival principles, procedures, and record keeping practices;
AND
Using judgment and analysis to determine the proper course of action needed to accomplish an assignment;
AND
Utilizing archival or record management software/systems/databases to complete work assignments.

OR
2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.

NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (i.e., beyond the first year) of graduate education is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

Specialized Experience: For the GS-7 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:

Experience performing basic archival tasks, such as verifying the completeness of a set of records, creating an inventory, or drafting a description;
AND
Applying regulations and policies to complete work assignments;
AND
Using general office software applications to complete work assignments.

OR
1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.

NOTE: Only education in excess of the basic education requirement (i.e., beyond Bachelor's degree) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

Education

Individual Occupational Requirement

Basic requirement for all grades:

Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
OR
Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Professional experience must be in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values.

The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
