Duties

Help

As a WRITER-EDITOR at the GS-1082-13 some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Editing content for Defense.gov, including articles, social media posts, photo captions and written words associated with video content, ensuring accuracy, logic, clarity and appropriate tone, as well as correcting grammar, punctuation and spelling errors.
  • Maintaining a strong working knowledge of current Department of Defense priorities and communication objectives to ensure timely and accurate coverage of DOD strategic goals and objectives.
  • Making rapid revisions to written content under time pressure, exercising quality control during all phases of the publication process to meet tight deadlines.
  • Facilitating subject matter expert and senior-level reviews and accurately consolidating and incorporating comments from appropriate stakeholders into final product.
  • Using collaboration software, including Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Teams, in an online environment to effectively edit multimedia content and communicate with team members.
  • Working on a rotating on-call schedule as a sole editor on evenings, weekends and federal holidays.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-13 grade level, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service:

  • Editing news and feature content accurately and rapidly under deadline.
  • Applying the Associated Press style guide and organization-specific style guides when editing multi-media content.
  • Identifying writing issues in drafts and providing editorial solutions and feedback to authors.
  • Maintaining knowledge of current events and organization initiatives to support editing comprehensive multimedia materials to produce factual products that are clear and useful to a diverse audience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
