Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Prepare a wide variety of recurring and nonrecurring official correspondence, reports, research, educational protocols, and other documents.
  • Review and process incoming and outgoing correspondence, reports, and other materials.
  • Receive and review regulations and directives.
  • Receive telephone calls, greet visitors, and oversee vendor visits.
  • Perform clerical and administrative work in support of the service chief and pathology section.
  • Utilize office computer programs such as: Vista, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and outlook to produce documents that may include surgical pathology/cytology reports, committee reports, and accession logs.
  • Maintain Service Chiefs or Anatomic Pathology supervisors' calendar, coordinate meeting arrangements, and schedule meetings and/or conferences.
  • Perform work involving the collection, compilation, and/or tracking of data and statistical information in support of the organization's operations.
  • Assist in planning, review, and reporting of data/statistical results of the program/project studies.
  • Perform analysis of data and generate a variety of reports.
  • Ensure quality assurance issues pertaining to the service are documented and appropriate follow-up action occurs regarding any problems, or recommendations found or made as a result of service's quality assurance activities.
  • Maintains automated system of program-specific data to track progress on items such as project milestones, reports, funding accomplishments, compliance strategies, etc.
  • Knowledge of Systemized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED) used for coding surgical pathology and cytology reports.
  • Medical transcription and knowledge of terminology concerning surgical pathology, necropsy, and cytology procedures as well as general medical terminology: anatomy, physiology, clinical medicine, surgery, diagnostic tests and pharmacology.
  • Code all Pathology actions using knowledge of CPT and workload codes.
  • Ensure that the College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission and any other accrediting agency standards are properly followed.


Work Schedule: M-F 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Physical Requirements: The work is mainly sedentary but on occasion requires standing, bending, climbing ladders, and walking. Employee may be called upon to work extended hours.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-7 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:Preparing a wide variety of recuring and nonrecurring official correspondence, reports, research, educational protocols, and other documents; collection, compilation, and/or tracking of data and statistical information; and entering/maintaining data in automated systems.

There is no educational substitution for the GS-7 level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
