As a Supervisory Health Science Policy Analyst, your duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides guidance, advice, and assistance to OSP leadership concerning major science policy issues affecting both NIH and the national biomedical research community, including those related to biosecurity (e.g., oversight of dual use research of concern and nucleic acid synthesis screening), biodefense, the bioeconomy, and as appropriate, international research.
  • Analyzes legislative proposals and broader policy developments involving the conduct of research throughout NIH, other federal agencies, and private institutions.
  • Serves as a liaison to other federal agencies and key communities, such as research participants, scientists, institutional leadership, IBC members, and other constituencies with interest in biosafety issues.
  • Provides OD staff support as part of the BBEBPD team for special science policy assignments and requests made by the Secretary DHHS, the NIH Director or Deputy Director, the Associate Director for Science Policy, and the Director of BBEBPD.
  • Maintains liaison with various NIH components in developing procedures for review of grant applications and intramural research potentially subject to biosecurity policies to assure consistency in the implementation of NIH policies and procedures.

Qualifications

In order to meet the Education Requirements for a Supervisory Health Science Policy Analyst, GS-0601, you must have a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the education requirement, you must have at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the federal government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of biomedical research programs; providing advice and assistance on biosafety/biosecurity policy issues affecting the organization and biomedical research community; making recommendations for long-range and immediate program objectives and proposals; preparing background materials for senior staff that capture the current state of knowledge in biosecurity policy areas; and providing support to committees and meetings to address program and biomedical research policy issues.
