Help

The role of this position is to intermediate level aircraft mechanical duties.Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.Typical work assignments at the WG-8 full performance level include:

  • Assembling, installing, and replacing aircraft mechanical components, parts, and accessories.
  • Making simple repairs and adjustments.
  • Participating in fuel/defuel operations.
  • Moving aircraft.
  • Running engines and auxiliary power units.
  • Cleaning, lubricating, and maintaining tools, equipment, and supplies of the trade.
  • Trains employees with lesser skills in aircraft mechanical duties.

At the WG-5 level, the incumbent will perform less complex duties under closer supervision.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired.

Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements:

  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT ELEMENT).
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Use of measuring instruments.
  • Troubleshooting

Applicants at the WG-5 grade level must have experience operating power and/hand tools and equipment such as pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, torque wrenches, and various gauges and meters, and experience or training reading and understanding technical manuals, orders, blueprints and sketches.

Applicants at the WG-8 level, in addition to the experience requirements above, applicants must have experience dissembling aircraft or major aircraft components for overhaul or modification and performing repairs, alignments and adjustments on aircraft systems/components.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
