This job opportunity is for a Pipefitter and is located in the Facilities Operations Unit, Facilities Management Section, Support Services Branch (SSB) of the U.S. Census Bureau's National Processing Center (NPC). The purpose of this position is to provide steam fitting, operating engineer duties, and occasional Boiler Relief operating duties. This position is included in the bargaining unit.

The individual selected for this position will:

  • Install, modify, and repair new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, circulating pumps, and radiators;
  • Work from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation of various piping systems and equipment;
  • Locate problems in high- and low-pressure piping systems and equipment;
  • Participate in maintaining an inventory including make, model, or other identifiers as well as stock on hand of parts/supplies equipment used in the work;
  • Operate forklift and load/unload trucks when needed and operate Scissor lift s and articulating boom lifts to make repairs to equipment and systems.
  • Provide Boiler Relief Operator duties during steam production season;
TOUR OF DUTY: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. An Alternate Work Schedule will be available aft er 6 months. Alternate Work Schedule is an 80-hour biweekly basic work requirement that is scheduled in less than 10 days; i.e., eight 9-hourdays/nights, one 8-hour day/night, and one day off.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work is performed inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy, and subject to sudden changes in temperature extremes. Works in high elevation, exposed to falls, shocks and burns from electrical wires, steam lines, and chemicals, and the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, and infections. Also exposed to smoke, soot, dust, fumes, acid, and moving machinery.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Repairs and installations are from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and hard-to-reach places. Work requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, may lift and carry items that weigh over 50 pounds.

PHYSICAL EXAM:
Selectee will be required to pass a physical examination prior to the effective date of appointment to this position. This physical exam will include a chest x-ray. Cost of physical will be the responsibility of selectee.

Applicants must have had sufficient training and experience to show their ability to perform the duties of the position. Qualifications will be determined by comparing applicants resume to their responses to the occupational questionnaire.
