As a Biologist within Wetland and Aquatic Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Coordinating and training lower graded federals, contractors, student interns and seasonal technicians in data processing techniques. Leading field crews engaged in collection of biological samples and data from all sampled species.
  • Assisting in preparation of standard operating procedures (SOP's, JHA's) and helping establish quality control/quality assurance protocols. Assisting with permit applications to perform research, as well as renewals are required by each permit. Maintaining a database of samples for analysis. Directing the entry of data into new and previously established databases.
  • Overseeing operation and maintenance of research equipment (e.g., dive/snorkel gear, data collection, boats, etc.), ordering supplies, coordinating use of vehicles, boats and analytical equipment, helping to plan travel and coordinating logistics for field sampling.
  • Overseeing and leading collection and analysis of stable isotope data for several species of threatened and endangered sea turtles, other species of reptiles and food resources for comparison. Leading preparation of samples already in-hand for analysis of stable Carbon and Nitrogen isotopes in the lab. Performing QA/QC on all samples, and preparing results for summary graphs, tables and presentations. Overseeing operation and maintenance of research equipment (e.g., drying over, -80 freezer, microscopes etc.).
  • Assisting supervisor and team leader in development and disseminating of science results to client/partners, the scientific community, and the public. Preparing metadata files, performing data analyses under the general guidance of more senior personnel. Preparing summary graphics and tables and assisting in writing reports and manuscripts for publication in scientific journals and presents the information at meetings and conferences.
  • Operating a government vehicle as an incidental driver.
Physical Demands:
The field work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Laboratory work requires moderate physical ability and agility and dexterity to manipulate samples and operate equipment.

Work Environment:
Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties.   • Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

*OR* B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-09:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

**Master's or equivalent graduate degree in biology or other directly related field of study or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or other related disciplines if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service.

Applicants may have experience that includes performing VHF radio telemetry and catching, handling, measuring and collecting biological samples from large reptiles. Applicants must have experience leading field crews in the collection and processing of data.

Examples of GS-07 level work may include: 1) assisting with planning, organizing, and implementing scientific investigations; 2) performing data analyses on portions of larger scientific investigations; 3) and receiving training in gathering, organizing, and interpreting biological, ecological, pathological, public use, or other information pertinent to scientific studies and/or scientific investigations. For examples 1-3, the work involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures; solving minor problems and making routine decisions.
