Help

  • Provide support and guidance to promote foundational research in data science methods.
  • Identify and implement emerging data and knowledge driven methods and technologies that address the evolving needs of the research community.
  • Advise and inform researchers and staff on the use of data science methods and tools.
  • Assist researchers and staff in translating new data science methods and data resources into practice.
  • Contribute to the development of roadmaps to shape long-term strategic goals for data and knowledge systems, especially in terms of handling large-scale and complex data systems.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
You must meet at least one of the following basic Office of Personnel Management prescribed occupational series requirements (GS-601, GS-1301, or GS-1560) described in the following three section. You do not need to meet the requirements for all three occupational series. All education, unless completed outside of the U.S., must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the education was completed.

  • For the 0601 Health Scientist (Data Scientist) - In order to qualify for the Interdisciplinary Health Scientist (Data Science), GS-601 position, you must:
  • A. possess a bachelor's degree, or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position.
  • For the GS-1301 Physical Scientist (Data Scientist) - In order to qualify for the interdisciplinary Physical Scientist (Data Science) GS-1301 position, you must:
  • A. possess a bachelor's degree, or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR
  • B. possess a combination of education (at least 24 semester hours in the listed coursework) and additional appropriate/related experience that is the equivalent to a major in physical science, engineering, or mathematics.
  • For the GS-1560 Data Scientist - In order to qualify for the interdisciplinary Data Scientist GS-1560 position, you must:
  • A. Possess a bachelor's degree, or graduate/higher level degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. OR
  • B. Possess a combination of education (at least 30 semester hours in the listed coursework) and additional appropriate/related experience that is the equivalent to a major in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or a field directly related to the position


In addition, in order to qualify for a Health Scientist (Data Science)/Physical Scientist (Data Science)/Data Scientist , GS-0601, 1301, and 1560 at the GS-13 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service, obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: partnering with relevant stakeholders (e.g., researchers, leadership) to build consensus around data standardization, integration, and sharing processes; creating and modifying scientific or medical applications using common programming languages (e.g., R, Python, SQL, Java, C/C++, Julia) to facilitate data clean-up, standardization, analysis, and retrieval efforts across an organization; presenting findings through data visualization techniques (e.g., interactive dashboards, charts, graphs) using programming languages (e.g., R, Python, SQL, Scala, Java, C/C++, Julia) or software packages (e.g., MatLab, Tableau); and applying advanced predictive analytic methods, such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), machine/deep learning, and other advanced Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) tools to derive insights from complex data sets (e.g., high volume, multidimensionality, complex structure).
