Duties

Help
  • Performs paramedic level emergency medical treatment to provide the most extensive pre-hospital care. Identifies, treats, communicates, and documents airway obstructions, respiratory arrest, and cardiac arrest.
  • Performs advanced airway techniques including the use of an esophageal or dual lumen airway device, oral intubation using laryngoscopy, needle or surgical cricothyrotomy, pleural decompression, and automatic transport ventilator devices.
  • Performs pulmonary resuscitation if breathing fails to start spontaneously upon the opening of the airway, using appropriate techniques such as mouth-to-mouth, mouth-to-nose, and mask-to-mouth.
  • Responds to on-site accidents or other emergencies involving injury and/or illness.
  • Performs routine medical technician duties in the Emergency Room, acute care clinic, primary care clinic, or similar type location.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position requires a current a National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) certification or a US state issued Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) certification.
  • This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on-call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid US State issued driver’s license to carry out position related duties.
  • Must possess or obtain (and maintain), within 6 months of appointment to position, hazardous materials level training certifications.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support (BLS) training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 1 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.

Basic Requirement for Emergency Medical Technician (Ambulance Driver):

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing basic emergency medical treatment; AND driving the ambulance. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
