Duties

Help
  • Serve as a Geographer for the Sustainable Range Program (SRP), the installation, and Range Branch, Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) program.
  • Provide SRP Geographic Information Systems (GIS) support for implementation of standards, data development and training.
  • Analyze spatial data concerning sustainable range program features in accordance with policy.
  • Communicate instructions to users of various skill levels.
  • Provide troubleshooting to users of various skill levels.
  • Present professional briefings or papers depicting project details, analysis of findings, or product generation.
  • Provide recommendations to supervisors based on data and requirements for annual and five year plans.
  • Provide feedback to peers on policies and standards.
  • Oversee production of charts, maps, graphs, and data for accuracy.
  • Coordinate assignments having impact on planning and decision-making processes at various levels.
  • Maintain technical capabilities to implement geospatial technology.
  • Provide technical input for computer technology acquisitions.
  • Ensure geospatial data is made available in various user formats for a wide array of customers.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Requires Secret Clearance (Tier 3).
  • The position requires the selectee to possess and maintain a valid state driver's license in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete or have completed the Inter-service Resident Range Safety Course (Intermediate), Army 101 Course (or suitable military experience), and be knowledgeable of AR-350-19, AR 385-63, TC 25-1, and TC 25-8.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 15% of the time.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Geographer:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work that involves 1) planning, developing, implementing, and managing of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and digital databases 2) developing, interpreting, or analyzing databases used in integrated management of natural or cultural resources 3) coordinating with outside offices regarding training, land management or environmental compliance activities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-11.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Education
