Duties

Help
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage all aspects of the hospital radiation safety program.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day activities required to meet all compliance laws, regulations, and guidance for the radioactive materials permit and develops evaluation criteria and guidelines for assessing the radiation safety program efficacy.
  • Develop and implement the radiation safety training program and policies/procedures in compliance with all local and federal regulations.
  • Direct and/or assist emergency operations involving radioactive materials.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in health physics to clinical staff, senior leadership, peer groups, and support personnel.
  • Manage the compliance and ensure all radiation-producing equipment throughout the Medical Facility is routinely evaluated by qualified personnel as required by local, federal, and DoD regulations, and applicable accrediting bodies.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Health Physicist:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education.

OR

C. Certification: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in radiation safety; administering a radiation safety program; and performing quality control check of radiation producing equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (NH-02).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
