Duties

Help

If selected for this position as a Translator, GS-1040-11/12 your duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Handles in-house translations, manages outsourced translations, conducts quality control, and evaluates external vendors. Also responsible for oral translations and compiling statistics and reports.
  • Researches scientific terminology through various sources, including journals, books, and consultations, to find accurate English equivalents.
  • Identifies and manages qualified vendors for outsourced translations, overseeing the entire process from request to final delivery, including negotiations, quality checks, and timely completion.
  • Translates complex scientific and medical materials for NIH scientists into English, Spanish, and other Romance languages (such as French, Italian, Portuguese, or Romanian).

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Translator, GS-1040 position you must meet the Basic Education Requirement:
Possess an undergraduate or graduate education that included major study in Spanish from an English-speaking college or university, English from a college or university in a Spanish-speaking country, or translating or interpreting where English and Spanish were prerequisites.

In addition to the above basic requirements, to qualify for a Translator position at the GS-11 level, you must have:
A. (1) One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service, obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: 1) providing written translations of medical records for use in treating patients; 2) reviewing translations for accuracy and completeness; 3) entering new terminology into databases for use by others; and 4) consulting with scientific staff in preparing translations of laboratory procedures.
OR
B. 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field.
OR
C. A combination of post baccalaureate education above the master's level in a related field, and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

In addition to the above basic requirements, to qualify for a Translator position at the GS-12 level, you must have:
A. (1) One year of specialized year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service, obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: 1) providing written translations of scientific materials (i.e., research articles, unpublished and published reports, correspondence) for use by research staff; 2) reviewing and recommending corrections to translations performed by others; 3) identifying new resources (dictionaries, specialized glossaries, internet resources) to help improve the quality of translations performed; and 4) performing research in journals, books, etc. to determine English equivalents of specialized scientific or medical terms.

You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
