Summary

This position is located in the Economic Research Service (ERS), Food Economics Division, Food Assistance Branch. The selectee is not required to report to a government office, however, the option to work in one of the Agency offices may be available.

In this position, you will establish research priorities and conceptualize, design, and conduct research on food security in the United States.

Duties

Help
  • Establishes research priorities and conceptualizes, designs, and conducts research on food security and the causes, consequences and policies that impact food security in the United States.
  • Works jointly with and provides back up to the leader of USDA’s domestic food security report in all aspects of production and dissemination of the report and follow-on activities.
  • Develops research methods and identifies appropriate data to address research questions and test research hypotheses.
  • Serves as an expert in U.S. food security definitions, measurement, and data sources for research and policy applications.
  • Presents, in both written and oral formats, the research and data findings to relevant policy and stakeholder communities to advance knowledge of food security and related social science research topics.
  • Conducts economic and statistical research that applies methods that seek to uncover the correlates, causes and consequences of food security or related measures of well-being.
  • Uses a variety of econometric and methodological approaches to understand the relationships between food security or related measures of well-being and food assistance programs.
  • Leads independent research on studies that examine food security among veteran populations and the relationship between food and nutrition assistance and other policies that impact food security or other related aspects of well-being.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements
Degree:economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
OR
Combination of education and experience:courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND
In addition to the basic requirements above, all applicants must also meet the following minimum qualification requirements:

GS-13
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting research on food security, food assistance programs, or other related indicators of well-being (e.g. poverty or material hardships), that result in peer-reviewed publications for which you were a co-author.

GS-14
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-14 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-13 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience includes experience leading research or teams of researchers on food security, food assistance programs, or other related indicators of well-being (e.g. poverty or material hardships), which resulted in authorship on peer-reviewed publications and, for at least one publication, as the sole or lead author.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
