Duties

Help

The Public Affairs Specialist has primary responsibility for collecting, assembling, preparing and disseminating information concerning the various programs of the organization through the media to further the unit's reach and impact among diverse audiences.

In this position, you will:

  • secure local, national, and international media coverage of special events, exhibitions, educational programs, corporate sponsorship, gifts to the Museum, major accessions, and other newsworthy events.
  • write and edit press materials including news releases, media advisories, feature stories, photo captions, story pitches and other media-related materials.
  • respond to media inquiries and arranges interviews between media representatives and Museum curators, administrators and staff.
  • provide logistical support for new conferences and press events. 
  • serve as coordinator for film crews and photo shoots at the Museum; assignments include the following: tracking filming requests and contracts, making logistical arrangements, preparing clearances of all appropriate forms and memos; completing follow up including invoicing.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification:  Experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience working in a museum or cultural institution performing public affairs duties including the following:  developing, implementing, and evaluating communications and/or media plans; maintaining relationships with media organizations; writing and editing materials for media distribution; producing and/or managing press conferences or media briefings.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.

Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications.

Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points, but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-veterans within each quality category. The Hiring Manager may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no veteran in that category is passed over to select a non-veteran in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Veterans who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
