Clarification from the agency

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or National. Current career Postal Service or Postal Inspection Service employees are ineligible to apply to this posting.

Duties

Help

The mission of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is to support and protect the U.S. Postal Service and its employees, infrastructure, and customers; enforce the laws that defend the nation's mail system from illegal or dangerous use; and ensure public trust in the mail. We are America's oldest federal law enforcement agency. For more than 200 years, U.S. Postal Inspectors have protected the U.S. Postal Service, secured the nation's mail system, and ensured public trust in the mail.

U.S. Postal Inspectors are federal law enforcement officers with jurisdiction in all criminal matters involving the security and integrity of the U.S. Postal Service and violations of postal-related laws. Postal Inspectors carry firearms, make arrests, execute federal search warrants, and serve subpoenas. Inspectors work with U.S. Attorneys, other law enforcement, and local prosecutors to investigate cases and prepare them for court.

Responsibilities

Postal Inspectors investigate criminal, civil, and administrative violations of postal related laws, often using forensics and cutting-edge technologies. It is essential that Inspectors be in sound physical condition and be capable of performing rigorous physical activities on a sustained basis. The Postal Inspector Team Leader position oversees and coordinates the investigation and disposition of criminal, civil and administrative cases within a geographic area.
