Summary

These positions are located in the USDA, Agricultural Research Services (ARS), Northeast Area, Henry A. Wallace Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), Facilities Division in Beltsville, MD.

In these positions, you will inspect, repair, maintain, and correct deficiencies and malfunctions in a variety of high-pressure systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generating radiators, steam converters, fin radiators, plumbing, and pumps used for various purposes.

Duties

Help
  • Repair and maintain radiators, heating coils, condensate return pumps, boilers, and water feed pumps.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain sanitary sewer mains and waste line systems serving all buildings located at BARC.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain equipment, such as autoclaves, sterilizers, distillation units, converters, and other steam heating equipment supporting research.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain lavatories, toilets, urinals, water baths, misting systems, and other similar equipment in laboratories and other buildings.
  • Inspect, adjust, repair, and maintain high, medium, and low-pressure steam mains and distribution systems with pressures ranging from 0 to 125 lbs.

  • As a condition of employment, the incumbent must be available for on-call duty outside normal duty hours, in accordance with procedures established for control of such on-call duty.
  • Employee may be required to work weekends, holidays, or before/after normal duty hours when necessary.
  • Employee may be required to report for duty during emergencies, critical periods, or during times when the Government is closed due to inclement weather and during Government budget shutdown furloughs.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 09/30/2024. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Pipefitter without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Physical Effort
Incumbent works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms where the systems and equipment are hard to reach. The incumbent is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and generally work in confined and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries parts, pipes or other equipment in excess of 50 lbs.

Working Conditions
Incumbent is subject to hot and cold temperatures both in and outside of tunnels and buildings. Work is performed in hot, wet, muddy, barnyards, and other unsanitary places. Incumbent is subject to burns, scalds, blowouts, and infections due to unsanitary conditions, as well as the possibility of broken bones.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.
