Help

As an Technical Writer-Editor, some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Writing and editing technical materials such as reports, presentations, and speeches on FERC-related topics to promote the understanding of the general public or in response to specific requests. Ensuring that the written products contain complete, accurate, and up-to-date information that conforms with OPP’s mission and that the information does conflict with other FERC or OPP publications.
  • Conducting extensive research and analysis to define and explain FERC policies, programs, and objectives and must often present highly technical topics in a manner that is appropriate to the understanding level of specific audiences. Synthesizing information by adjusting stylistic and logical approaches, refining research methods, and selecting appropriate information to present.
  • Utilizing knowledge of the wholesale electric and natural gas markets and the participants in those markets to develop appropriate information materials and to reconcile ambiguous or conflicting information. Understanding of the relationship between electricity and natural gas markets.
  • Staying up-to-date with industry advancements and pursuing continuous professional development to enhance technical expertise and skills for communicating with FERC constituents.

Qualifications

In addition to the education required for this position, you must have one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level. Specialized experience is defined as: Specialized experience is defined as experience in data analysis, technical writing, collaboration with colleagues, and establishing partnerships with FERC constituents such as members of the general public such as community organizations, Tribal Governments, indigenous communities, environmental justice communities, industry, and landowners. 

Strong quality control and team leadership skills are necessary to promote innovation and ensure success.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including any volunteer experience.

Additional information

Employees selected for remote positions will not be required to report to an official Commission duty station on any frequent, regular or recurring basis. Official duty stations will be verified and approved upon selection and will be set where the employee regularly performs his or her duties. Locality pay and cost of living increases for remote workers will be set within the General Schedule Locality Pay Table of the remote worker's official worksite. Desired locations are New Orleans, LA; Houston, TX; Dallas, TX; Chicago, IL; and Minneapolis, MN.
