Duties

Help
  • Assist in the repair of boiler plant heating systems including oil and gas fired high pressure boilers producing steam or high temperature hot water and distribution systems and related auxiliary components.
  • Operate low pressure boilers and assists a journey level boiler plant operator in the operation of high pressure boiler equipment to produce and control the amount of steam or high temperature water necessary to meet demands.
  • Perform repair and maintenance on low pressure and high pressure steam and water and distribution systems; removes and replaces parts, cleans refractory, repairs leaks, performs preventive maintenance on pumps, fans, etc.; performs emergency repairs.
  • Assist with maintenance such as: checking multiple types of valves for proper operation and adjustment's as necessary to maintain specified pressures, no leaks and accuracy.
  • Check pipes and pipe joints for leakages, checking insulation for signs of deterioration or damage and replacing or repairing defective parts as needed.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Tier 1, Non-Sensitive, Low Risk background is required for this position.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license.
  • The employee must obtain and maintain within 1 year 6 months of appointment a Current Class IV Boiler Fireman License or equivalent which limits the certified operator of a boiler plant not exceeding an aggregate of 20MBTU/HR.
  • Pre-employment physical required.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. Have the ability to perform common maintenance and repair tasks including performing installation, repair, or maintenance on facility boilers, to include boiler plants and auxiliary equipment. Ability to repair pipe systems that carry water, steam, air, or other liquids or gases. May assist in installing heating and cooling equipment. Am able to determine the correct power tools, and equipment to use. Perform work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and
    where equipment is worked on in hard to reach places. Work requires considerable overhead work that must be done from extension
    ladders, staging, forklifts, and structural support beams. Frequently lifts and carries item weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally
    heavier.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Exposed to the possibility of
    burns from steam and high temperature hot water, and heat exhaustion from working in heating distribution manholes. Exposed to
    the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes and bruises; occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones from falls from ladders and/
    or platforms. Subject to the possibility of electric shock. Exposed to explosive nature of combustible gas. Frequently exposed to
    asbestos when removing insulation and carcinogens from fuel lines. Required wearing protective clothing and breathing apparatus
    (respirator).
