Summary

The Dept of Surgery at the VA Boston HCS (VABHS) is soliciting applications for 2 full-time position podiatrists at the VABHS. Podiatry covers 3 major campuses and one community clinic, has a high outpatient volume and elective and acute surgical cases at 2 campuses. Trainees from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Podiatry Residency Program rotate at VABHS with the VA Podiatry Section an integral part of the Surgical training program.

The major duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Diagnose and assess patients' conditions by reviewing medical histories, performing physical exams, and reviewing medical imaging, laboratory tests, and other appropriate diagnostic studies.
  • Provide nonsurgical treatment for foot, ankle, and lower leg ailments, such as at risk foot care, wound care, and prescribing special shoe inserts (orthotics) to improve a patient's mobility.
  • Perform foot and ankle surgeries, which include limb salvage, forefoot, rearfoot, and ankle procedures.
  • Provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to foot and ankle conditions treatment and foot and ankle wellness.
  • Prescribe medications and other appropriate treatment modalities.
  • Refer patients to other physicians or specialists as deemed appropriate..
  • Provide foot and ankle care in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency room settings
  • Participate in podiatry rotational call schedule and perform emergency podiatric surgical procedures.
  • Supervise students and residents who rotate through the podiatry service.
  • Participate in all surgical quality/performance improvement initiatives as appropriate.
  • Complete all electronic, clinical, daily charting and documentation, and training required by the Medical Center in a timely manner as appropriate, including outcomes reporting as appropriate.
  • Conduct research, read journals, and attend conferences to keep up with advances in podiatric medicine and surgery.
  • Maintain interpersonal relationships, including conflict resolution and the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with other providers, healthcare professionals, and staff from a wide array of clinical services, specialties and departments.
  • Perform any other assigned duties by Chief of Podiatry and Chief of Surgical Service.
This position will require podiatrist to participate in the on-call rotation schedule. Trainees from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Podiatry Residency Program rotate at VABHS with the VA Podiatry Section an integral part of the Surgical training program.

Work Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Podiatrist Basic Requirements

  • Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~
  • Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: Training in rearfoot and ankle reconstruction surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and/or complex diabetic limb salvage. Board qualified or certified in American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

The full performance level of this vacancy is VM-15.

Physical Requirements: This position will require walking, standing or sitting for periods of up to or beyond 10 to 12 hours each day. In addition, the incumbent will need to bend, lift and turn.
