Summary

The incumbent installs, troubleshoots for malfunctions, repairs (minor and Major), tests and performs necessary maintenance on all NC, refrigeration, heating, (general and medical) vacuum/compressed air systems, water treatment equipment and all auxiliary support systems five separate heating systems. The three building containing offices, communication center, electronic data, processing centers, eleven operating rooms, open heart M/Room, clean rooms, oral surgery suites, surgery suites, cardiac intensive care unit, medical intensive care unit, surgical intensive care unit, blood banks, clinical and research laboratories, retail Canteen Service, Blind Rehabilitation Center, with optical equipment, and numerous other patient-support services. The incumbent utilizes manufacturers recommendations and specifications, supervisory instructions (oral, Written, and illustrated), a high degree of skill, experience, and manual dexterity to complete maintenance, repair, and test operations of equipment to provide proper operations.
The incumbent must possess the basic knowledge of theories, principles, and trade standards to install, repair, modify and adjust the equipment to provide the proper temperature of conditioned space and proper operation of equipment to the buildings. Also, the incumbent must have the ability to troubleshoot, install, repairer modify complex controls such as electronic, pneumatic, thermostatic, temperature sensors, (electro- _ pneumatic and mechanical) relays, hydraulic capacity, and safety controls using manufacturer's specifications; skill, knowledge, experience and manual dexterity to complete every aspect of the WG-10 skills. The incumbent must possess a knowledge of and use the (basic and advanced) principles and theories of the refrigeration cycle, temperature measurement, properties of all refrigerants, knowledge of construction and knowledge of operation of a wide variety of (domestic, commercial and industrial) A/C and refrigeration systems utilizing a working journeyman knowledge and skill in several trades such as electrical, plumbing, sheet metal, medical equipment and machinist. The incumbent troubleshoots, repairs, modifies refrigeration equipment used by Dietetic Service, Morgue, Clinical and Research laboratories, Canteen Service, Wards, Medical laboratories located throughout the VAMC. This work is on units such as walk-in coolers and freezers, sub-zero deep freezers, drinking water unit, ice making machines, domestic-type refrigerators, morgue refrigerators, centrifuges, and other commercial-type refrigeration units used throughout the VAMC.

The incumbent frequently works from suspended walkways, ladders, scaffolding, and parapets using hoists, chain blocks, lift bars, jacks, and various tools to lift and carry parts weighing up to several hundred pounds, and drift into and out of specific positions and locations while disĀ mantling and reassembling equipment.
