Summary

This position is a Maintenance Worker in the Facilities Management Service at the St Cloud VA Health Care System. The candidate completes corrective and preventative maintenance work orders that include inspecting, maintaining, and repairing architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of facility buildings by performing a variety of tasks associated with painting, masonry, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC maintenance.

Help

Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs common structural issues such as doors or windows not closing or opening; patches walls; mitigates trip and fall hazards; replaces decorative trim; hangs pictures; moves furniture; mounts and maintains handrail.
  • Removes and installs floor and ceiling tiles, wall furnishings, gypsum wall board, windows, and doors; assists carpenters on larger and more complex projects.
  • Paints walls, doors, and handrails.
  • Cleans, maintains, repairs, removes, and installs plumbing fixtures such as toilet flush valves, sink faucets; assists plumbers replacing pipes.
  • Inspects, repairs, and replaces electrical fixtures and controls including switches, receptacles, relays, and light fixtures. Assists with pulling wires.
  • Tests circuits to see if they are complete after making repairs or installations.
  • Performs recurring preventative maintenance on ice machines and water coolers.
  • Tests HVAC components for proper operation and repairs or replaces belts, fans, fuses, and filters.
  • Performs visual, audible, electrical, and mechanical inspections of HVAC systems for proper temperature, oil levels, unusual noises, overheated bearings, loose connections, faulty insulation, frayed or loose belts, gaskets, and pulleys. Assists with replacement of compressors and motors from walk in freezers, window ACs, water coolers, and ice machines.
  • Responsible for the physical security of all tools and equipment assigned to the position, as well as that of the facility. After completing maintenance or repair, ensures equipment or system is retested, then restored or placed into operation, that all debris is removed from the work area, and the area is clean.
  • Cleans workspace daily.
  • Completes and submits required paperwork for assignments. (i.e., work orders, EWRs, PM printouts, etc.).
  • Operates a government vehicle as part of his/her regular and recurring duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Working Conditions/Environment: Work is performed inside and outside in all ambient conditions. Areas of work may be in confined and uncomfortable areas, and in areas where there is a possibility of high noise levels. Work environment is often dusty, dirty, and greasy. PPE is required when working in hazardous conditions. The incumbent is required to be familiar with proper safety precautions when working in patient rooms or areas where infections or contagious diseases exist.
