Help
  • You will ensure safe, orderly, and expeditious movement of air traffic.
  • You will provide preflight, in-flight, and post-flight assistance to aircraft.
  • You will issue control instructions to ensure separation or flying within and between delegated airspace.
  • You will decode and issue weather reports, runway information, type approach, lost communication, and missed approach procedures to be used.
  • You will document initial accident and incident records and forward to appropriate Branch Chiefs/ATCFO promptly.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the success of combat operations or the availability of combat-essential systems.
  • This position requires rotating shift work.

  • Air traffic control specialists must possess the facility ratings required at the facility where the position is located. You will be required to maintain a valid Air Traffic Control Specialist and/or Control Tower Operator Certificate.

Qualifications

For GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Assisting lost aircraft, aircraft in distress, and aircraft experiencing in-flight difficulties; 2) Providing Air Traffic Control knowledge of operations, methods, and techniques to ensure safe and effective air traffic flow; 3) Following regulations and procedures governing the control and separation of air traffic; and 4) Providing training to civilian and military air traffic controllers. NOTE: Experience must be fully supported in your resume to be considered for this position.

For GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-10 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:1) Providing air traffic control for assigned airspace; 2) Following regulations and procedures governing the control and separation of air traffic; and 3) Ensuring air traffic control operations, methods, and techniques are followed in a safe and effective manner. NOTE: Experience must be fully supported in your resume to be considered for this position.

You must have extensive and thorough knowledge of ATC operations, methods and techniques demonstrated by a minimum of four years' experience as a certified Air Traffic Controller with two years' experience in ATC Radar.

You must have knowledge including but not limited to meteorology, air navigation, standard air traffic control communications and phraseology, performance characteristics of various types of aircraft, types and uses of aids to air navigation and the regulation and procedures governing the control and separation of air traffic.

This information pertains to living in the Key West area. Please read the following carefully.
Key West is a truly unique tourist destination that many refer to as "The American Caribbean". The town lies at the end of a 130-mile-long island chain extending southwest of mainland Florida.
The Florida Keys are a string of barrier islands which are linked by "The Overseas Highway" (US 1) and naturally offer water-based recreational activities to those having an interest in such.
Key West also offers a wide variety of dining and entertainment options, influenced greatly by its rich history and diverse culture.
As is typical of any resort community, Key West has a high cost of living relative to the mainland, and a notable lack of affordable housing.
For example, a 1-bedroom, 1-bath rental unit averages ~$2,000 depending on location and condition, and typically measures between 500 and 600 square feet.
A 2-bedroom, 2-bath rental unit generally rents from ~$3,000, again depending on location and condition, and measures between 600 and 1,000 square feet.
A single room in a house can rent ~$1,200+ a month.
In most cases, one is required to pay first and last months as well as a security deposit in one lump sum payment.
The cost to purchase a small house is, on average, $400,000 and up. A mobile home can be purchased for somewhere in the vicinity of $150,000.
Also to be considered: the Florida Keys are, geographically speaking, rather small and unidirectional, so the notion of moving "further out" to take advantage of lower housing costs is not realistic.
Indicative monthly costs for basic utilities:

- Water - $40+
- Sewer - $35+
- Garbage - $25+

NAS Key West does provide a limited number of government quarters to DoD civilian employees at fairly reasonable rental rates ranging from ~$2,500 per month depending on size of unit, number of bedrooms, and grade of employee. A security deposit equal to one month's rent is required.
Basic utilities are included in the rental costs; however, cable, internet, and telephone are not.

This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.
