Duties

Help
  • Assign specific codes to ambulatory surgeries and inpatient medical and surgical encounters.
  • Utilize coding guidelines to support proper sequencing of ICD-10-CM and CPT codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements in utilizing the ICD-10-CM, HCPCS coding books.
  • Perform quantitative analysis and checks medical record for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze and interpret documentation in record, ensuring accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data.
  • Review the coding of professional services to ensure accuracy on all billable encounters.

  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the Experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience
GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes: Performing technically complex medical coding functions utilizing International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) coding resources; and Analyze and abstract records rendered in both the outpatient and inpatient settings for coding ICD-10, Evaluation and Management coding (E&M) and CPT. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
