This is a temporary / not-to-exceed (NTE) 13-month position.

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), U.S. Botanic Garden (USBG), Learning & Engagement (L&E) Division, Learning & Outreach (L&O) Branch. The incumbent serves as an Education Specialist who assists in the development of education programs while implementing and facilitating education programs and products that fulfill the USBG's mission.

Major Duties Include:

Educational Program Facilitation and Work

Assists with the development and facilitation of informal educational programs and hands-on activities for engagements at the Garden and at off-site events and venues, as well as volunteer and intern training.

Facilitates and supports informal educational programs and hands-on activities for various audiences using inquiry-and object-based learning techniques. Programs may include, but are not limited to, Pre-K through 12 school field trip programs, teacher professional development, off-site community engagement programs, family programs, discovery carts, drop-in engagement activities.

Collaborates with L&O team members in the drafting of educational goals, objectives, and outcomes for programs.

Assures that programs are compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility objectives and follow safe work practices.

As needed, drafts educational content for website, social media, brochures, handouts, interpretive signs, and curriculum for review by the science, Horticulture, and L&E Team.

Educational Program Administration and Collaboration

Supports the Learning & Outreach Team and other pertinent stakeholders in the scheduling of field trips, educational programs, and related on-site and virtual meetings using a variety of scheduling tools.

Recommends lessons and materials for educational programming in a garden museum setting and for community engagement events.

Assists with education program data management through data entry, retrieval, consolidation, and analysis, data labeling, and data visualization.

Educational Supplies Maintenance and Management

Works with the L&O Team and broader L&E team to identify, organize, and order needed educational supplies.

In collaboration with other L&E, Operations and Horticulture team members, supports the setup and take-down of educational programs, including setting up tables and chairs and engagement-specific supplies and equipment.

Ensures that Classroom and other educational locations and materials setups are compliant with established accessibility and safety practices.

Publicizes Educational Programs

Collaborates with the USBG Senior Communications Specialist and other L&E team members to enhance public understanding and awareness of educational programs, activities, and projects of the USBG.

Supports the publicizing of educational programs through the utilization of various tools, such as event and email management platforms.

Qualifications

You must meet the United States Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) qualification requirements (including specialized experience and/or educational requirements) for the advertised position. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

Candidates for the GS-07 grade level must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Facilitating and supporting educational programs and products for a variety of audiences.
  • Delivering educational programs in a public garden, museum, or cultural organization.
  • Supporting on-site and off-site educational programs about nature, science, horticulture, or other plant science or botanical subject areas.
  • Organizing, maintaining and managing educational or other resource materials.
  • Assisting colleagues with training staff and volunteers to deliver educational programs or activities.

Superior Academic Achievement

Superior Academic Achievement which is defined as having achieved superior academic standing as evidenced by:

(1) Class standing - upper third of the graduating class in the college, university or major subdivision;

(2) Grade-point average (GPA) – (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on the official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum;

(3) Honor society membership in a national scholastic honor society listed by the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision.

To be creditable, superior academic achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Combination of Graduate Education and Professional Experience 

Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience.

Candidates for the GS-09 grade level must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Developing and facilitating educational programs and products for a variety of audiences.
  • Facilitating on-site and off-site educational programs about nature, science, horticulture, or other plant science or botanical subject areas.
  • Delivering educational programs in a public garden, museum, or cultural organization.

Qualifying on Education:

You may substitute education for experience for this position. Your education must consist of two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree. Must be related to the duties of the position.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: 

All applicants must have the following:

A. Successful completion of a full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included or was supplemented by major field of study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.

B. Combination of education and experience----courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the four-year course study described in A above.

Special Instructions for Foreign Education

Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs to be acceptable for Federal employment.

Qualifying education from colleges and universities in foreign countries must be evaluated in terms of equivalency to that acquired in U.S. colleges and universities. Applicants educated in whole or in part of foreign countries must submit sufficient evidence, including transcripts, to an accredited private organization for an equivalency evaluation of course work and degree.

You must provide a copy of the letter containing the results of the equivalency evaluation with a course-by-course listing if selected.
