Duties

Help

As a MUSEUM TECHNICIAN, you will:

  • Perform accessioning, cataloging, tracking and photography of museum objects in accordance with current manual and automated methods and file systems.
  • Assist in conducting physical inventories of museum objects on display and in storage.
  • Perform duties with respect to the safe handling and physical care of museum objects in accordance with up-to-date preservation techniques ensuring that attention is given to delicate and/or sensitive objects, including packing/unpacking and inspection of newly acquired or loaned objects, preparation of condition reports and recommending repairs when needed, and maintaining and improving proper methods of storage and exhibit for the preservation of each object.

This is a term position. A term position does not confer eligibility for transfer to another agency. A term employee does not acquire competitive status or eligibility to be converted to a career conditional appointment, nor is the time served under a term appointment creditable toward career tenure. A term appointment carries no implied or specific commitment of consideration for, or placement into, a permanent appointment.

The employment of a term employee ends automatically at the expiration of his or her term. Term employees, who were previously in a career or career-conditional status, will not automatically be able to return to their career or career-conditional position once the term is over; they may, however, reapply for the career or career-conditional position if it is available.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year and indicate number of hours worked per week on your resume.

  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • Work involves some sedentary desk work, much walking, bending and lifting of objects, as well as physical exertion such as lifting and moving heavy or moderately heavy, yet fragile objects, as well as crates, shelves, storage units, etc. Physical coordination and care in handling and moving objects is mandatory.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-05, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and which equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully operate or manage museum collection or similar collection of valuable objects. Qualifying specialized experience includes:

Following established procedures to ensure museum objects of historical or cultural significance are protected from environmental hazards, such as extreme temperature/humidity, mold, damaging lighting conditions, or pests; AND

Collections management, registration, cataloging, research, inventorying museum collections, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled.

OR

EDUCATION: 4 years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study, or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field such as aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.

OR

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the requirement must equal at least 100 percent.
