Duties

Help
  • Point of contact for all specimens received by the Laboratory.
  • Provide general guidance consisting of policy and objectives.
  • Responsible for preparing memoranda, correspondence, recurring reports, and other laboratory documentation that is generally free of format, spelling, and grammatical errors.
  • Perform technical and administrative support functions as necessary.
  • Receive, inventory and process specimens.

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-05
Specialized Experience
: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes: communicating with customers and personnel, assisting the supervisor with inventory management and utilizing automation software and hardware to complete tasks.

OR

Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

GS-06
Specialized Experience
: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes: receiving urine specimens; updating an electronic tracking database showing the storage of specimens; and assisting with the preparation of laboratory documentation for use in legal proceedings.

OR

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Chemistry, or Forensic Science. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.   • CERTIFICATION: Laboratory and individual certification is a requirement of the forensic laboratory. Individual certification is on the job training that formally documents specific training and individual proficiency in the accurate and reliable execution of each task or area certified, and is an annual requirement. As such, certification is also a statement of confidence in the product of the employee to successfully withstand legal and administrative review. Certification will be based on demonstrated proficiency/competency in the task and understanding of task-related scientific and forensic bases. Certification must be obtained within 1 year.
