The primary purpose of this position, RECREATION ASSISTANT, NK-0189-02, is to manage and direct the Wright-Patterson AFB implementation of the Air Force Fitness Assessment program and provide interpretation of DAF policy while implementing procedures for physical fitness assessments to military personnel within the area of responsibility.

Duties

Help

- Plan, organize, and administer the Fitness Assessment Cell (FAC) testing.
- Oversee the administration of fitness assessments for military personnel.
- Train FAC augments, Unit Fitness Program Managers (UFPMs) and Physical Training Leaders (PTLs) to ensure proper implementation of AF instruction.
- Use word processing equipment to generate a variety of products (reports, memorandums, letters, and correspondence).
- Initiate administrative procedures for members identified as not meeting fitness standards.

  • Measurements for height, weight, and body composition will be taken in a private room or in a partitioned area away from the general flow of customers using a tape measure IAW AF guidance.
  • Requires annual Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Basic Life Support/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/BLS/AED) Certification. Applicant must obtain certification within 90 days of entrance on duty.
  • May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours.
  • Must complete all mandatory training IAW appropriate regulations, and maintain certification in standard first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required for the position.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-0189, Recreation Aid and Assistant Series.

ONLY EXPERIENCE OBTAINED BY THE CLOSING DATE OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at a level close to the work of this position that has given them the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform. Typically, we would find this experience in work within this field that is closely related. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04), pay band or equivalent. Examples of specialize experience include (1) group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; (2) teacher's aide in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; (3) aide or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; (4) aide or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities.

Note: In-service applicants can qualify with at least 1 year of specialized experience at either the next lower level (GS-04) or the second lower level (GS-03). However, for outside applicants (i.e., those without current or prior Federal competitive or excepted service), 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower level is required.

EDUCATION:
Successfully completed a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS WITH YOUR APPLICATION IF USING EDUCATION AS A SUBSTITUTION OF EXPERIENCE.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS WITH YOUR APPLICATION IF USING EDUCATION AS A SUBSTITUTION OF EXPERIENCE.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of exercise physiology and exercise techniques to conduct physical fitness evaluations in accordance with guidance.
2. Knowledge of various office automation software programs, tools, and techniques to support office operations and produce a variety of documents, such as letters, reports, spreadsheets, databases, and graphs.
3. Knowledge of fitness assessment standards, protocols, and procedures.
4. Knowledge of grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation and commonly used specialized terminology to prepare material correctly.
5. Skill in administering sub maximal cardiovascular endurance tests.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work involves physical exertion when participating in activities, bending, lifting heavy items (weight equipment, stooping, etc). Incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 pounds when demonstrating equipment. Work requires strenuous efforts in demonstrating equipment and exercise.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The program involves risks or discomforts which requires normal safety precautions typical of various sporting events. Work areas are adequately lighted; heated and ventilated.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
