Duties

If selected for this position, you may perform the following duties:

  • Evaluate the NIAID research portfolio to identify opportunities to address health disparities and health equity.
  • Assess and recommend scientific diversity goals and objectives to ensure diversity is considered in the development of, coordination, funding, and administration of grant awards, cooperative agreements, and contracts.
  • Formulate, plan, direct, and evaluate broad NIAID-wide or trans-NIH diversity initiatives, objectives, and policies that support NIAID's research planning activities.
  • Provide leadership for planning and development, which includes establishing and evaluating major scientific goals and objectives and ensuring diversity objectives are established and met for scientific research programs of both national and international scope.
  • Collaborate with staff across NIH ICs, the NIH Center for Scientific Review, and members of the NIH UNITE initiative to identify and implement trans-NIH research priorities, funding initiatives, and grant review procedures to better address health disparities and health equity.
  • Represent NIAID at internal and external meetings, conferences, workshops, and symposia, and participate in national and international conferences on matters relating to scientific workforce diversity, health equity and health disparities research, and issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Monitor and researches public policy, legislation, Congressional initiatives, and laws related to diversity and inclusion programs.
  • Evaluate diversity efforts and resource utilization against progress made and adjusts programs to meet exceptionally important, new, or changed national policies and goals.

Qualifications

You qualify for a Scientific Diversity Officer GS-601-15 level, if you meet the following requirements:

Basic Qualification Requirement:
you must have a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position.

Additional Qualification Requirements:
One (1) year of qualifying specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, which includes planning, implementing, and evaluating scientific diversity initiatives conducted by an organization. This specialized experience includes the following types of tasks: managing health disparities and health equity programs for a biomedical research organization; leading scientific workforce development efforts to improve diversity, health disparities, and health equity; developing policies, strategies, and initiatives to promote scientific diversity, health equity, and disparities research; and collaborating and coordinating with other officials, staff, and organizations on scientific diversity programs and efforts.
