Duties

Help

As a Marine Machinery Repairer, you will:

  • Support the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment including diesel engines, turbines, compressors, hydraulic systems, steering engines, and other mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic control systems.
  • Conduct a range of tests and inspections on Ready Reserve Force ships as per Phase IV Maintenance Procedures, including operating and testing various equipment like pumps, compressors, turbines, and winches, along with associated valves and piping systems.
  • Perform or oversee the removal and reinstallation of locking devices utilized to secure the main propulsion shafting and the ship's rudder(s).
  • Work with other Fleet elements as directed to maintain hull integrity and dehumidification envelopes of floating assets, including verification of all hull fittings as being properly secured and leak-free.
  • When assigned, perform machinery maintenance and repairs aboard the full range of Fleet craft, including tugs, crane barges, utility boats, patrol boats and transportation craft.

The ideal candidate should possess the skill set and ability to disassembly and repair of minor malfunctioning valves, minor repairs to cargo winches, boat davits, anchor windlasses, replacement of gauges, correction of leaks in various equipment and piping systems, including hydraulic oil systems, renewal of pump packing, freeing up of seized pumps, blowers, etc., and numerous other tasks of a mechanical nature.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the  training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

To qualify for the WG-08, your experience should include experience equal or equivalent to the following:

  • Ability to use test equipment and measuring devices such as levels, feeler gauges, calipers to perform minor repair, adjust, to test shipboard equipment.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools common to shipboard machinery plant maintenance.
  • Ability to understand manuals, blueprints, and sketches, use basic math, follow instructions, and solve problems independently.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work is arduous at times, requiring climbing up to 50 foot vertical ladders, frequently lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 45 pounds. The employee is required to push, pull, kneel, crouch, stoop, and working in awkward positions and close quarters. Heavy exertion, excessive walking, performance of arduous and hazardous assignments are required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee is exposed to extreme heat, cold, high winds, rough water, and slippery surfaces. The employee must be alert and safety conscious at all times due to the nature of the work and surroundings. Work is performed both indoors and outside. Employee is subject to prevailing weather conditions, temperature extremes, and wet and/or icy conditions when working outside. Employee is subject to
irritations and discomfort from noise, dust, grease, heat, and fumes when working either inside or outside. Work is performed on parts and systems that are dirty, oily, or greasy. Employee works in spaces containing installed asbestos. Employee is subject to cuts, bums, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and other injuries resulting from falls or hazards of the occupation when making repairs, or when positioning and/or moving equipment. Employee must follow prescribed safety practices, and use appropriate safety equipment (e.g ., protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, protective clothing, etc.) which are provided. Some safety items may be uncomfortable to wear, or may be required to be worn for prolonged periods of time. In summary, the working environment is typical of, and includes all the hazards of, a shipboard, shipyard, and/or marine environment, including working in adverse climatic conditions and on slippery decks. May be required to work outside of normal hours in response to emergent conditions within the fleet.
