Duties

Help

  • Directs the preparation and servicing of the DC Court of Appeals (DCCA) calendar, issuance of opinions and processing of Rule 40 petitions.
  • Assists the Clerk of the Court in developing and implementing the annual Management Action Plan, aligned to the DC Courts’ strategic plan.
  • Recommends operating policies, practices and procedures to enhance the DCCA’s overall effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Manages and directs the work activities of the DCCA’s Public Office, Calendar Clerk, Opinions Clerk, Legal Division and the Committee on Admission and Unauthorized Practice of Law Division. 
  • Maintains close coordination with operating divisions of the Superior Court and the Court Reporting Division, to anticipate and respond to changes and challenges, as well as developing and facilitating coordination of initiatives to address mutual problems.
  • Prepares, maintains, and releases a variety of reports on the issuance of published and unpublished opinions.
  • Assists in the general administration of the Clerk of the Court's Office and in the absence of the Clerk of the Court serves in an "Acting" capacity.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited university with a Law degree and a minimum of ten years of legal experience in positions of appellate practice, with at least six (6) years of management responsibility within a court, legal or justice-related environment. Must be an active member in good standing with the District of Columbia Bar.

To qualify you must provide evidence of progressively responsible leadership experience that is indicative of senior executive-level management capability and directly related to the skills and abilities outlined under Court Executive Service Core Qualifications (CESCQ) listed in the how to apply section. Typically, experience of this nature will have been gained at or above the GS/JS-15 grade level in the federal/DC Court service or its equivalent in the public/private sector. Candidates must possess senior-level management and technical experience. Candidates' experience must have been at a high level of difficulty to show clearly that the candidate possesses the professional and technical, as well as program knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined under the five CESCQ. Failure to meet the basic qualification and address the CESCQ factors automatically disqualifies an applicant.
