Summary

Position provides clinical support to the Surgery Service/Podiatry Section and is directly responsible to the Chief of Podiatry. The Surgery Service provides inpatient and outpatient care as well as same day surgery care. The Surgery Service must be covered 24 hours per day, 7 days per week; therefore, on-duty and on-call schedules are necessary for all subspecialties. Supporting all existing safety practices relevant to this position.

Help

Major duties include but aren't limited to:

  • Prepare podiatric work-up, x-rays, laboratory or other requests, as required.
  • Debride warts, diabetic ulcers and assess for infection.
  • Assigned a daily clinic and perform routine foot care for over 300 at-risk patients per month under direct and indirect supervision of Podiatry staff.
  • Perform a variety of standardized and routine procedures that are non-invasive.
  • Request, obtain and prepare aerobic cultures and pathology specimens.
  • Develop a variety of accommodative devices to correct or alleviate injury or pathologic foot conditions.
  • Perform prep and variety of ankle/foot tapings in treatment for injuries.
  • Assure proper stock levels and care of all instruments used in the Podiatry clinic.
  • Assist medical staff with or perform diagnostic procedures used to diagnose medical conditions.
  • Adjust equipment and retakes tests as indicated.
  • Determine technical factors, set controls and operates equipment and instruments.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/18/2024.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

  • For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05.
The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

This position has an individual occupational requirement.
  • Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

Preferred Experience: Performs clinical assessments and provides various forms of nonĀ­invasive treatments through delivery of direct patient care for nail fungi, nail trimming, toenail debridement, callus and corn removal, slant backs for ingrown toenails, application of topical medications, foot soaks, and basic podiatry care within scope of work and under the direct supervision of the attending podiatrist; Applies wraps/dressings for ulcers and pediatric wound care, performs sports medicine taping for soft tissue injuries, applies foot padding for hammertoes, corns, calluses, diabetic ulcers, bunions, post-operative, and pediatric specific diseases, disorders, injuries, and preventative medicine; Responsible for triage and vital sign measurement and documentations upon intake.

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Prepare podiatric work-up, x-rays, laboratory or other requests. Assesses the condition and determines if referral to Podiatrist is required. Performs debridement of ingrown, elongated, and fungal toenails with and without cautery. Requests, obtains and prepares aerobic.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary but also requires some standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying of light items. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work also requires heavy lifting of equipment and patients. Manual dexterity in handling instruments is required in order to accurately perform duties and avoid injury.
