Help

Perform duties as a laborer in direct support of the supervisor and/or other trade and craft employees engaged in maintenance-related activities. Load, unload, separate, stack, carry materials, supplies and packaging weighing from 40 to 100 pounds with assistance. Lift, move and carry heavy objects such as heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies. Incumbent will dig ditches, shovel snow and perform general duties assisting craft employees. Incumbent will perform operator maintenance, cleaning of all equipment and cleaning of assigned areas. Performs a variety of manual labor tasks incidental to trade or craft work, or warehousing or construction and maintenance activities requiring application of knowledge and experience gained, on previous similar assignments. Incumbent may or may not work by oneself. Work involves one or a combination of the following tasks:

  • Trades: Assist skilled trade or craft employees by retrieving tools, materials and equipment. Hold, move, rearrange, lift, carry and stack items and objects. Clean tools, equipment and work areas. May perform repetitive work processes to assist journey level personnel during large projects or short deadline periods. Gather, stack and bale facility cardboard for recycling. Perform tasks that require substantial physical effort and significant multi-step manual skill. Separate, stack, carry, load/unload, assemble, and maintain a variety of equipment and material. Operate equipment and use tools designed to lift/lower, adjust, engage/disengage components or attached devices. Operate equipment, use tools, and substantial physical effort to clean, strip, sand, and perform other preparation work on items, equipment, and material. Performs routine maintenance work required at various project facilities, such as scraping, painting, scrubbing, sweeping, debris removal, tree cutting, litter pickup and other general housekeeping tasks.
  • Facilities: Dig and grade ditches and trenches with pick and shovel. Prepare and restore the work site. Fill and level holes, tracks, and ruts. Repair damaged roadways, mix materials and level surface of patch with tamper. Set form, mix and pour concrete. Operate various power equipment by, adjusting controls and mechanisms. Perform routine maintenance by oiling and cleaning machinery. May operate and control specialized powered equipment, such as jack hammers or heavy power tools.
  • Warehousing: Load and unload trucks and other conveyances. Move, pack, unpack, sort, segregate, arrange, stack, pile, or relocates a large variety of supply items.
  • Vehicles: May be required to operate light vehicles (not to exceed 10,000 pounds) to transport tools, equipment and materials. Must follow safety rules and regulations while operating vehicle.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 07:00am-3:30pm. May include Weekends and Holidays.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT (Screen Out)

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
May be required to operate light vehicles (not to exceed 10,000 pounds) to transport tools, equipment and materials. Must follow safety rules and regulations while operating vehicle.

Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust
and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts, scrapes or more serious injuries. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.

NOTE: Employee is required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions and its use is mandatory.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
