Duties

Help

As an Industrial Hygienist, you will:

  • Prepares, coordinates or reviews the development of design documents for program compliance, cost estimates from construction documents or service contract documents for services and tasks involving EHS program areas such as asbestos, lead-paint, drinking water quality, and/or indoor air quality.
  • Performing industrial hygiene assessments, inspections or testing, performing associated risk assessments and recommending actions associated with facility or operational problems or hazards.
  • Conducts periodic industrial hygiene training sessions, as needed or requested, for project managers, facility managers, leasing administration managers, and individuals in other disciplines as appropriate, and
    management to promote awareness of the industrial hygienist program and introduce them to new materials and designs, procedures, and/or new and innovative processes and techniques.
  • Serves as either the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) or the Contracting Officer's Technical Representative (COTR) for industrial hygiene and occupational safety assessments on major GSA proposals
    and surveys prepared under contract. Has authority to accept or reject the technical aspects of the contractor's work.
  • Works with other recognized industrial hygiene and occupational health experts, primarily external to the agency, to develop a coordinated approach to unique problems or areas in which GSA, other Federal agencies or the private sector have previously not been involved or concerned.
  • Applies a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methods to assess and improve program effectiveness and complex management processes, projects and systems. Reviews specific goals and objectives; monitors sequence and timing of key program events and milestones and evaluates overall program accomplishments and significant contributions in terms of agency goals.

The GS-13 salary range starts at $113,792.00 per year.  

If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.  

To qualify, you must meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements.

  1. A bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  2. A bachelor’s degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  3. Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

In addition to the basic requirements stated above, applicants must meet specialized experience requirements, in order to be qualified for this position. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-12 level independently conducting surveys/inspections based upon compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations including on-site federally-owned and leased space, and environmental sampling (quantitative and qualitative) in order to evaluate chemical, physical, biological or mechanical (HVAC systems) stresses; and preparing written reports based upon the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers. Such experience must also include development of recommendations encompassing engineering, administrative or personal controls with special emphasis on asbestos control, abatement and monitoring.

  • Expert knowledge of a wide range of laws, regulations, policies, principles and practices affecting the Agency in order to extend and modify existing approaches, precedents and methods, develop new approaches, methods, policies and procedures, and serve as a recognized technical authority.
  • Ability to oversee regional industrial hygiene and/or environmental health and safety contract work and/or interagency projects, as needed to execute the regional industrial hygiene program requirements and to provide expert industrial hygienist and related advice to agency and contractor personnel in the performance of a broad range of industrial hygienist work.
  • Knowledge of and skill in communications and public relations techniques sufficient to effectively represent the regional office at conferences, meetings and consultations with State agencies, employer/employee groups and special interest groups concerning program objectives and issues.
  • Expert knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of industrial hygiene to perform industrial hygiene assessments, inspections or testing and to perform associated risk assessments and recommend actions associated with facility or operational problems or hazards.
