The Transportation Specialist (Safety Research):

  • Participates in efforts to design, plan, and oversee research relating to complex transit safety topics using analytical, mathematical, and/or statistical theories, principles, and practices.
  • Serves as the project manager and technical lead for safety research studies and reports.
  • Reviews and analyzes existing safety research on topics relevant to transit safety, identifies research needs, and recommends new research projects.
  • Understands and applies best practices and plain language principles to ensure communication, in all forms, is responsive to the purpose of the communication and is easily understood by the intended audience.

The ideal candidate for this position has experience designing, planning, or overseeing transportation safety research using analytical, mathematical, or statistical theories, principles, and practices, strong project management and communication skills, and an interest in performing mission-driven work to improve safety.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • REMOTE WORK This position is eligible for remote work, which does not require reporting to the agency worksite location on a regular basis.   • PCS/RELOCATION/RECRUITMENT:  Permanent Change of Station (PCS), Relocation, and Recruitment Incentive authorization varies by position/selection and a service agreement may be required.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Applicants may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.

To qualify for the Grade 12, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11 it must include:

  • Experience assisting in safety or security related research.
  • Experience applying analytical, mathematical, or statistical theories, principles, or practices. 

To qualify for the Grade 13, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-12 it must include:

  • Experience designing, planning, or overseeing safety or security related research.
  • Experience applying analytical, mathematical, or statistical theories, principles, or practices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Research - Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation
    of data; and the reporting of results.
  • Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example,
    technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Written Communication - Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.
  • Project Management - Knowledge of the principles, methods, or tools for developing, scheduling, coordinating, and managing projects and resources, including monitoring and inspecting costs, work, and contractor performance.
