Help

RRTs work independently providing respiratory care and will have knowledge of varied respiratory therapy procedures/techniques, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. This position is utilized as a staff RRT that administers all forms of respiratory care. Assist in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of patients suffering from cardiac failure, asthma, emphysema, COPD, shock, pneumonia, and other disorders affecting, either directly or indirectly, the cardiopulmonary system and make recommendations regarding alternative treatment directions. Duties may consist of various pharmaceutical agents, gases, aerosols, and intermittent positive adjunctive devices that enable them to perform their tasks.

Duties and level of supervision will vary by grade. Duties listed are for the full performance level:

  • RRT may perform other duties that are not mentioned below. Essential functions may change from time to time to reflect the current trends within the field of respiratory therapy, and to meet the cardio-pulmonary needs of the patients served.
  • Prepares, calibrates, interfaces, and operates all equipment used in polysomnographic Home Sleep Testing procedures and complex respiratory therapy equipment to provide emergency and intensive respiratory care. Makes adjustments in mechanical ventilator settings to maintain the patient's respiratory stability. Applies advanced ventilator techniques. Demonstrates ability in setting up and adjusting non-invasive ventilators.
  • Performs various procedures to control and maintain artificial airways. Assesses the patient for weaning from the ventilator and extubation. Performs airway care on intensive care patients.
  • Performs bedside pulmonary diagnostic tests, basic spirometry, and oxygen shunt studies, stress testing with oximeter, and night sleep monitored by oximeter.
  • Responds to all Code Blue and Rapid Response calls/pages. Inserts and manages artificial airways.
  • Provides Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. During transport of patients, maintains clearance of airway, monitors vital signs and performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation when necessary.
  • Performs routine respiratory therapy treatments in all hospital ward areas.
  • Provides bronchopulmonary hygiene.
  • Monitors patient physiological responses and documents in the medical record and notifies staff and physicians. Provides patient instruction for home cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.
  • Provides respiratory care when requested. Records treatments, findings and progress.
  • Based on orders, makes adjustments in home PAP therapy equipment. Collects specimens of sputum for bacteriological and cytological studies.
  • Integrates pulmonary care in pre and post-operative care. Adapts routine techniques to meet special conditions of the patient or special requests from physicians.
  • Records significant observations.
  • Instructs patients on home sleep study equipment. Administers Epworth Sleep Scale test to patients. Scores Home Sleep Tests.
  • Observes guidelines for infection control and safety policies. Regularly monitor the condition of respiratory equipment. Notifies supervisor of any necessary repair or replacement.
  • Keeps current with recent advances in Respiratory Care. Attends CME programs in the hospital. Maintains all required licensure, certifications, and credentials.
  • Rotates "On-Call" day and night assignments. Works varied shifts as needed/requested to provide 24-hour coverage including weekends and holidays.
  • Performs instruction for hook up of overnight oximetry testing for patient and/or caregiver. Understands oximeter readings.
  • Draws arterial, venous and mixed venous blood samples from patients. Assists in maintenance of arterial lines.
  • Researches the patient electronic medical record, remote PAP data, Vista Imaging and/or Joint Legacy Viewer for medical reports from VA's throughout the country.
  • Performs positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting and adjusting and performs re-evaluation of patient for equipment usage and function. Must have complete knowledge of CPAP function, set-up and operation of different types of CPAP, Bi-Level, and complex sleep units.
  • Responsible for filling orders that the veteran requires to maintain use of his/her PAP therapy device according to policy. Ensures that adequate and appropriate follow up orders are in entered for continued care.
  • Assists the Supervisory Respiratory Therapist, Service Chief, or Service Administrative Officer with administrative duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday with varied 8,10,12-hour tours, alternating weekends.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: RTs/RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f).
  • Education: Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor.
  • Licensure: Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT. (COPY OF LICENSE REQUIRED)
  • Credential: Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT. (COPY OF CERTIFICATION REQUIRED FOR GS-7/9/11)
    • Loss of Licensure, Certification or Credentials: An employee in this occupation, who fails to maintain the required certifications, RRT credential or license must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in the termination of employment. Once credentialed, licensed or certified, RTs/RRTs must maintain a full, valid and unrestricted license, credential and certification to practice respiratory care.

Registered Respiratory Therapist, GS-07

Experience, Education, Licensure and Registration: In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must possess their RRT credential.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate all the following KSAs:
  1. Ability to perform therapeutic modalities related to respiratory care.
  2. Skill in analyzing physiological specimens obtained to include arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, End tidal Co2 (ETCo2) monitoring, basic spirometry and other basic diagnostic procedures.
  3. Ability to collaboratively consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals for respiratory care to help provide favorable patient outcomes.
  4. Skill in assessing oxygenation and ventilation.
  5. Ability to perform basic airway management to include artificial airways and mechanical ventilation.
Registered Respiratory Therapist, GS-09

Experience or Education, Licensure and Credential: Candidates must have:
  • One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level; OR
  • A Master of Science degree in respiratory care AND a license AND an RRT credential.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate all the following KSAs:
  1. Skill in performing therapeutic modalities related to respiratory care.
  2. Ability to collaboratively consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals to help provide favorable patient outcomes.
  3. Skill in assessing oxygenation and ventilation.
  4. Ability to perform airway management to include artificial airways and mechanical ventilation.
Registered Respiratory Therapist, GS-11

Experience, Licensure and Credential: Candidates must have:
  • One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level AND
  • Hold an active license and RRT credential.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate all the following KSAs:
  1. Ability to collaboratively consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals for complex respiratory care to develop care plans to provide favorable patient outcomes.
  2. Skill in evaluating the efficacies of therapeutic modalities.
  3. Skill in performing advanced airway and ventilation management
Preferred Experience: 2 year minimum ICU/Acute Care experience desired.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-7 to GS-11.

Physical Requirements: This work requires moderate lifting (15-44lbs), moderate carrying, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending, climbing legs only, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distinguish shades of colors, and hearing (aid may be permitted). Environmental factors of position is working in excessive noise, intermittent and working alone.
