Summary

This position is located with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Plains Area, Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center, Healthy Body Weight Research in Grand Forks, ND.

Help
  • Provide vision, exercise leadership, and maintain line authority over scientists and support personnel assigned to the Unit.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with other leading university, industry, and government laboratories.
  • Conceive, lead, and implement both independent research and multidisciplinary, team-based research that will include clinical trials with physiological, clinical, or behavioral outcomes.
  • Submit at least two manuscripts per year for publication of experimental results in peer-reviewed journals, and present information at scientific meetings and at other research institutions.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements for Dietitian and Nutritionist Series, 0630
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements for all grade levels:

  • Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation.
  • Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.
  • Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
Note: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.

Basic Requirements for Physiology Series, 0413
Degree: in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.

Evaluation of Education: Courses such as anatomy; cytology; invertebrate and vertebrate zoology; embryology; entomology; animal, dairy, and poultry husbandry; nutrition; genetics; and physiology may be used to meet the 24-semester-hour requirement in the basic animal sciences.

Courses in physiology, animal or human physiology, cellular physiology, or courses that were well oriented toward animal or human physiology, e.g., some advanced courses in biochemistry, are qualifying as animal physiology courses. Courses in related fields such as cytology and microbiology (including microbial physiology) may also be qualifying, provided the course work dealt directly with the application of scientific principles underlying animal physiology, or with the methodology and techniques applied in animal physiology work.

Basic Requirements for Biology Series, 0401
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Additional Requirements
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

GS-14:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-14 level of this position are:Experience leading a research program related to human nutrition; conducting clinical human nutrition trials; publishing nutritional research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals; and presenting research findings at scientific meetings.

GS-15:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-15 level of this position are: Experience formulating, executing, and leading a collaborative research program related to human nutrition; publishing nutritional research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals; conducting clinical human nutrition trials; presenting research findings at domestic and international scientific meetings; and developing collaborative relationships with other university, industry, and government laboratories.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To further support your qualifications, it is strongly recommended that you submit a one-page abstract of your MS thesis and/or Ph.D. dissertation. Failure to do so could result in loss of your consideration/referral.
