The Evansville, IN VA Health Care Center is seeking a full-time Podiatrist to join Surgery Service! The incumbent will be responsible for providing Podiatry clinical and surgery services to Veterans at the EHCC Facility and at nearby Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). The Podiatry Surgeon may be asked to provide care in various settings to include outpatient clinics and Med/Surg.

Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Staff within the Podiatry Surgery service area are ultimately responsible for all aspects of medical care in the process of evaluation and treatment of the Podiatry service patients. The incumbent evaluates the patient to assess changes in the physical and mental status. A progress note is written in the patient's chart.
  • The podiatrist is responsible to coordinate with providers within their own and outside of their own Service Line, and with other VHA facilities or community providers as determined by the plan of care for the veteran. Open, clear, and collaborative engagements are a key duty. Incumbent is ultimately responsible to ensure barriers for Veterans and staff are minimized in order to promote a positive work environment. Fosters positive working relationships with staff, peers and Veterans.
  • Podiatrist performs consultations within his/her own and other service lines as indicated. S/He is responsible for the provision of clinical care.
  • The podiatrist is appropriately credentialed and privileged.
  • Participating in and/or managing a broad range of Podiatry surgery practice. This encompasses all areas of general Podiatry and musculoskeletal surgery including joint reconstructive services.
  • Performing surgery and provide pre-op and post-op care as indicated for major and minor procedures, as well as Podiatry consultation for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Maintaining good diagnostic, judgmental, and therapeutic acumen.
  • Timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) in accordance with facility policy.
  • Managing podiatric conditions, taking into consideration both medical and psychological aspects of patient care.
  • Work closely with the Local Office of Community Care to refer patients as appropriate for tertiary care.
  • Ordering medications, diagnostic tests, and referral consultations as necessary.
  • Communicating with patients and family members educating then to understand their medical condition.
  • Supporting health promotion and disease prevention activities.
  • Completing clinical charting and documentation appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Podiatrists participate in various hospital committees, departmental and hospital in-service programs, and education programs of the department and the hospital as directed by Chief of Surgical Service. S/he is also involved in continuous quality improvement through peer review process.

Podiatrist Basic Requirements

  • Education: Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~
  • Residency Training: Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~
  • Licensure: Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency: Podiatrists appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. ยง 7402(d), 7407(d).
Podiatrist Staff Requirements
  • Staff Podiatrist Medical: None beyond the basic requirements. The individual must have completed an accredited residency, and/or possess experience to perform general podiatric duties and some specialized functions and procedures, without supervision. Staff podiatrists may also include attending podiatrists who train physician residents, assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine. These podiatrists perform office based procedures only and generally work a set 40-hour per-week schedule.
  • Staff Podiatrist Surgical: Should be board qualified or board certified by a Council on Podiatric Medical Education certification board, or other equivalent certification to grant surgical privileges. The individual must possess experience to perform duties as a podiatrist and surgeon, and have completed an accredited residency, and/or possess experience to perform general and surgical duties and some specialized functions and procedures, without supervision. Staff podiatrist surgeons also includes attending physicians who train podiatrist residents, assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine. These podiatrists will perform office based procedures and operating room procedures and are responsible for surgical patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Added work responsibilities may include seeing hospital patients daily and carrying a pager or be available by phone for emergency consultations.

Preferred Experience: Must be a board certified Podiatrist with professional podiatry experience in an office, clinic, or hospital setting.

References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-4 Podiatrist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: This position requires a pre-employment physical. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far visions correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.
