Summary

You will serve as an INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Industrial Hygiene Department of US NMRTC GUANTANAMO CUBA.

THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT. The National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2020 streamlines certain Department of Defense (DoD) civilian Direct Hire Authorities to recruit and appoint qualified candidates directly to certain DoD competitive service positions.

Duties

Help
  • You will conduct periodic surveys of working conditions to determine the nature and magnitude of hazardous exposures and the effectiveness of existing control measures.
  • You will assist in the planning and conducting sampling using various instrumentation and equipment.
  • You will investigate health problems that arise among workers.
  • You will coordinate with engineers to develop control measures where hazard exposures are discovered.
  • You will prepare technical reports identifying health hazards and recommends measure for the reduction or elimination.
  • You will advise other agency activities on administrative and technical aspects of the occupational health program.

  • This position may require travel to places within and outside the contiguous United States which could include remote or isolated sites. You may be required to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • If eligible for permanent change of station, the appointee will be required to sign a transportation agreement to establish a Government time in service requirement of 12 months.
  • May be required to obtain a VISA dependent on the overseas country's laws/regulations.
  • You will be required to sign the Statement of Understanding for Overseas Employment acknowledging receipt and understanding of the statement of living and working conditions for this location.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate qualifying experience demonstrating the following:
1) Utilizing professional industrial hygiene concepts to conduct on-site surveys to evaluate conditions which may be hazardous to workers' health;
2) Conducting training programs that promote the elimination of health hazards;
3) Developing processes/procedures for occupational health controls; and
4) Utilizing a variety of sampling devices, such as electro-static precipitators, light meters, combustible gas indicators, and mercury vapor detectors, to determine the extent of hazards.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must posses:

Basic education requirement for the GS-0690, Industrial Hygiene Series;
Have successfully completed bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science that was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable)

OR

Have successfully completed a Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The degree was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable).

OR

Have a Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
