Summary

About the Position: Receives, reviews, prepares, and fills authorized prescriber orders for prescriptions and bulk drug orders. Provides appropriate information to patients on proper use of medications, referring questions requiring professional knowledge and experience to a registered pharmacist.
Hours are M-F varying from 0600 - 1700, with a one hour Lunch break and one 15 minute break in the morning and afternoon.

Duties

Help
  • Receives, reviews, prepares, and fills authorized prescriber orders for prescriptions and bulk drug orders.
  • Performs filling of bulk drug orders issued to medication use areas within the facility in accordance with local policy.
  • Receives and reviews prescriptions using knowledge of pharmaceuticals in order to perform duties in pharmacy functional areas.
  • Determines type of substance, strength, dosage, and quantity to be dispensed in accordance with accepted practice and pharmacy standing operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Enters prescriptions into outpatient computer system, reviewing profile for allergies, drug/drug or drug/food interactions, and duplicate orders.
  • Obtains the pharmaceutical, prepares package labels, and sets up for review.
  • Works with prescriber or pharmacist to clarify issues or problems with dosing, interactions, or instructions.
  • Provides appropriate information to patients on proper use of medications, referring questions requiring professional knowledge and experience to a registered pharmacist.
  • Performs pharmaceutical calculations for a variety of preparations using knowledge of pharmaceuticals in order to perform duties in pharmacy functional areas.
  • Assures the safe handling, preparation, storage, and disposal of cytotoxic and hazardous drugs.
  • Assists in conducting medication storage area inspections to assure adequate pharmaceutical supplies, using knowledge of pharmaceuticals in order to perform duties in pharmacy functional areas.
  • Assists in conducting medication storage areas inspections/liaison visits.
  • Assists in educating clinic staff or other facility staff on the proper storage, access, and security of pharmaceuticals to include controlled drugs.
  • Prepares replenishment orders, receives incoming stock, checks for discrepancies, and rotates stock for the full range of medication and supplies, including controlled substances.
  • Calls attention to short expiration dates and unusual appearance of items.
  • Maintains security and limited access of all pharmaceuticals.
  • knowledge of the characteristics of drugs, toxicity, possible adverse reactions, and drug-drug interactions; knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature (including generic, chemical, and proprietary names of drug) and dosage forms.

  • This position may require the employee to wear a uniform, scrubs, or other appropriate medical professional attire while on duty.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons in accordance with Army Regulation 40-562, Chapters 3 and 4.
  • This position is inclement weather essential. This means that you must be willing to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position may require shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts vary from 0600-1500 or 0800-1700.
  • A National Pharmacy Technician Certification is highly desired, but not required.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service which includes filling prescriptions, distributing pharmaceuticals, and utilizing pharmacy-based computer systems gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
