Duties

Help
  • Perform foot patrols in order to detect problem situations and/or conditions.
  • Control vehicle and pedestrian traffic at fixed posts per security regulations.
  • Exercise and apply a body of established rules, regulations, and legal authorities to enforce specialized personnel access procedures.
  • Detect trespassing violations in order to protect and prevent unauthorized access to highly sensitive restricted areas requiring a diverse range of protective responsibilities over federal property, employees, and visitors.
  • Work within prescribed limitations on the use of detention authority and the use of force (including weapons) according to circumstances encountered during the performance of duties.
  • Maintain a safe and secure facility through compliance with Federal, State, County and municipal laws, ordinances, agency rules, regulations, and applicable policies pertaining to security guard work.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements. Incumbent will be required to regularly work 12 hour shifts.
  • This position requires the incumbent to qualify annually with a 9mm Semi-Automatic pistol and be proficient in any other required firearms, scanner metal detector and oleoresin capsicum (OC) pepper spray/foam.
  • The incumbent is required to maintain a high standard of conduct; and will be assessed under the Individual Reliability Program to show they can work effectively under pressure or emergency conditions with a positive attitude toward his/her duties.
  • This position requires incumbent to complete a pre-employment physical, physical agility, and psychological examinations and annual thereafter to ensure the required level of physical health and ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires incumbent to be trained and maintain current required certifications in CPR techniques and must know first aid.
  • This position requires incumbent to wear a chemical protective mask and a uniform.
  • This position has the following medical requirements; good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.
  • This position is under the Federal Motor Operations medical requirement specified in 5 Code of Federal Regulations Section 930 Part 109; persons operating a Government owned or leased vehicle are subject to medical testing once every 4 years.
  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg amendment to the gun control act of 1968 which makes it a felony for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to ship, transport, possess, or receive firearms or ammunition.
  • This position requires the incumbent not have any criminal convictions and possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Criminal convictions and/or loss of license may result in removal from the position.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

Competition for Security Guard position is restricted by law to persons entitled to Veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment. If there are no Veterans preference eligible applicants available, non-preference applicants may be considered.


In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1.) providing armed guard services for the protection of life (employees, visitors, patients, etc.) and/or government property; 2.) writing incident reports and/or findings regarding an incident; and 3.) using an automated system to create electronic badges, type incident reports, and/or daily activity logs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
