Duties

Help
  • The incumbent performs blood collection procedures by venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques using proper sterile or clean techniques.
  • Performs special procedures to include, but not limited to administration of Glucola for glucose tolerance testing, laboratory waived (point-of-care) testing,
  • such as glucose testing using the glucometer, urine pregnancy testing, dipstick urinalysis, rapid strep testing, and rapid HIV testing.
  • Provides phlebotomy training tor new employees, as well as all other hospital staff.
  • Establishes proper patient identity. Verifies patient identifiers and ensures accountability of specimens by proper and complete labeling with the patient's name, identification number,
  • date and time of collection, and collector's initials and/or other labeling requirements established by laboratory/hospital accreditation regulations.
  • Performs daily maintenance and quality control on test kits and urinalysis equipment.

  • Receives and prepares a variety of laboratory specimens (i.e. blood, urine, stool, sputum, tissue, and other body fluids) for testing or shipment using processing methods.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The incumbent could be required to work in contaminated and infectious areas, wards, and laboratories
  • The incumbent could be required to work irregular or rotating shifts to include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Naval Hospital Pensacola also has three clinics located within a 45-mile radius on NAS Pensacola and NAS Whiting Field.
  • The employee may be requested to work at any of these facilities (Naval Hospital Main Lab, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Naval Air Technical Training Center, Naval Air Station Whiting Field).
  • Tier 3 Positions (Secret): This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) collecting routine and specialized laboratory samples laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, and tissue; 2) verifying and/or creating patient labels for samples; 3) utilizing automated systems to enter and maintain patient laboratory information.

OR

Education:
Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position such as pathology, biology, phlebotomy. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
