We are interested in scientists with expertise from a variety of disciplines within The National Institutes of Health research portfolio - ranging from biomedical engineering to cell biology to behavioral health sciences. As a scientific review officer, you can have a tremendous positive impact on the scientific community.

Scientific Review Officers (SROs) have a tremendous positive impact on biomedical science by ensuring that the peer review process is fair, expert, and free of undue influence, allowing the identification of the most promising research for funding consideration by NIH. SROs utilize their scientific expertise, communication skills, and leadership skills to manage all aspects of convening a panel of experts to assess the scientific and technical merit of grant applications and conveying those assessments to funding institutes and centers. SROs have a broad range of responsibilities including:

  • Identifying and recruiting reviewers
  • Providing training and guidance to reviewers in applying review criteria
  • Managing the peer review meeting for quality peer review outcomes
  • Producing summary statements reflective of peer review outcomes
  • Acting as the Designated Federal Official and ensuring policies and procedures are followed
